The most vital part of the camera is the imaging chip that converts photons to electrons. Sony has been one of the fore-runners in developing these CCD chips and the evolution from standard CCD chips from the late 1980's involved several steps in making them smaller and better.
Sony introduced HAD(TM) CCDs in 1984. The HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) means there is an additional accumulation layer added to a n+P diode junction. It drains-off thermally generated electrons and thus reduces thermal noise - most notable at low light levels.
