Artist Biography:

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, the Spanish Cubist Painter and Sculptor, was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain. The son of a drawing teacher, Picasso was to become more famous than artist ever before, dominating western art in the 20th Century.Living between Paris and Barcelona in the early 1900s, his circle of friends included Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Gertrude and Leo Stein.

Blue Period His Blue Period was triggered at this time by a close friend's suicide in a Parisian Café. Picasso's Blue Period paintings depict blue isolation and urban squalor.Picasso created the famous works Blue Nude (1902) and The Old Guitarist (1903/4) during this period.

Rose Period The Circus Meddrano in Paris with its colourful performers induced Picasso to enter his Rose Period in 1905, using rose, yellow ochre and grey on his palette, his portrayal of the performers became softer and more delicate. The Art dealer Ambroise Vollard bought most of his Rose works releasing him from financial worry. Garcon a la pipe (Boy with a Pipe) from the Rose period, recently sold for $93,000,000 in New York!

Cubism Deeply impressed by Cezanne and Iberian Sculptures at the Louvre, Pablo Picasso experimented with geometrical form and in 1906 he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, his first cubist work: geometric form, fragmented and abstracted. His association with George Braque during 1909-13 led to the most important art movement since the renaissance, Cubism. In 1912 he started to incorporate newspaper print, postage stamps and other material into his work, a style called collage.

In 1915 he produced Neo Classical Line drawings in the style of Ingres. After the First World War his focus on Cubism gave way to a more stylistic existence, Picasso's fame had even shielded him from the attentions of the Nazis in Paris who regarded his work as "degenerate art".

Picasso and Surrealism In 1925 Andre Breton proclaimed Picasso a surrealist; however his often violent depiction of sexuality owed a lot more to his personal life than some surrealist ideal.

Picasso's turbulent relationships with the women and children in his life are well known. He Lived with the painter Françoise Gilot for ten years and she bore him two children: Claude and Paloma Picasso. He also fathered two other children - Paulo (with Olga Koklova) and Maya (with Marie-Therese Walter). Painter and photographer Dora Maar was perhaps his most famous lover, and in 1961 he married Jacqueline Roque.

The Spanish Civil War By 1936, the Spanish Civil War had profoundly affected Picasso, the expression of which culminated in his painting Guernica (1937), dominated by mythological and Spanish themes, the Minotaur and the bullfight became symbols of the War and the Fascist atrocities.

Following World War II his work became less political and he started exploring historical styles, reproducing the works of earlier artists.

Picasso continued his prolific work in painting, drawing, prints, ceramics, and sculpture until his death on April 8, 1973.
